Throughout 2013 IFHP is celebrating its Centenary year

Throughout 2013 IFHP is celebrating its’ Centenary year. The celebration was kicked-off last week at the Crystal in London with a lecture by Sir Peter Hall.

Sir Peter Hall offered important insights on how to reconcile apparently impossible contradictions in contemporary urban policy. The lecture, organized in cooperation with the Association of European Schools of Planning (AESOP), was followed by a roundtable panel discussion where invited experts from the private public and civic sectors engaged in dialogue on the challenges of achieving a better, smarter tomorrow for cities, with particular attention to the application of new technologies.

The panelists were Martin Powell, Head of Urban Development of SIEMENS UK, Dr Rick Robinson, Smarter Cities Executive from IBM, Jo Negrini, Director for Strategic Regeneration, Planning & Olympic Legacy and Strategic Commissioning & Community from the London Borough of Newham and Dr. Kiril Stanilov, Senior Research Associate at the Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis at University College London. The discussion was moderated by Lee Shostak, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Town & Country Planning Association (TCPA).

Marking the launch of IFHP’s Centenary
The event marked the launch of IFHP’s Centenary. In celebration of this IFHP has developed an ambitious calendar of Centenary Activities spanning from congresses and conferences, lectures, on-line activities, to live workshops and roundtables, plugging into partner events and travel activities taking the IFHP to various places throughout the world. The highlight of the Centenary will be the world congress in London on 8th-11th June 2013.

For IFHP the centenary is an opportunity to look forward. The centenary congress will focus on “a tomorrow for cities - for people, by people” – looking ahead at new thinking and best practices in planning and housing, and the creation of cities and communities.

The first year of a new Centenary for IFHP
IFHP President, Flemming Borreskov states “2013 marks the last year of the first century of IFHP, but more important it marks the first year of a new centenary for IFHP, as an organization dedicated to offering a worldwide platform for sustainable urban solutions”.
